Here's quick help from the notorious Happy Hacker laboratory. Windows ME is basically just Windows 98 SE with pretty icons and other visuals from Windows 2000. It lets you alter the startup screen the same way as Windows 95 and 98, but at least on the two computers we tested, did not use any shutdown screens. Where did the DOS prompt go? You absolutely need the DOS prompt to do any serious hacking with Windows SE, but you won't find it from the Start menu. So what you have to do is find a program called command.com and run it - and there is your DOS prompt. Believe it or not, on our version of Windows SE we found two instances of apparently identical command.com, one in c:/windows/ and the other in c:/windows/command/ebd/. We were really excited about the ability of Windows ME to run Internet connection sharing. This sets up your Windows ME box to act as a router to allow other computers on a network with it to access the Internet through the connection the ME box is running. However, we discovered that for this to work, you need to be willing to totally trash your existing home network. It changed the IP address on the NIC on the server, but didn't change it on the client computer even though we ran the ME client program on the client computer. Apparently you have to have no starting configuration of your network in order for this to work. Otherwise, to hack with Windows ME, just follow the instructions for Win 95/98 at http://www.happyhacker.org/gtmhh/gtmhh2.shtml ____________________________________________________________________ *** How to hack with AOL 6.0 ____________________________________________________________________ At least on the Windows ME box on which we installed it, AOL allows one to telnet and use any other DOS prompt programs. AOL 6.0 users, welcome to the real Internet! If you have a home Ethernet network, AOL 6.0 has the same problem as Windows ME Conenction Sharing. It will merrily trash the IP address on the NIC of your victim computer. Sigh, AOL giveth telnet and AOL taketh away your NIC settings… ____________________________________________________________________ *** Hacker Wargame News ____________________________________________________________________ From: "Mud" To: "Carolyn Meinel" Subject: About how my lab is doing Hi Carolyn! It would be grateful if you would write about us. Where do I begin?...?? HackersLab (http://www.hackerslab.com ) is a name of my company and http://Hackerslab.org is a non-commicial site run by HackersLab. Please see http://www.hackerslab.com for details. - to get the organization chart of our staff, please see http://www.hackerslab.com/ecom/organizationE.htm - here's what service we offer: http://www.hackerslab.com/ecom/serviceE.htm - about our R&D center, please see http://www.hackerslab.com/ecom/centerE.htm Should you have any questions, please let me know, I would be glad to answer them. ------------------------------------------------------- Above is what my BOSS told me to give you and here's mine, the very truth! I think Mr Lee Jeong-Nam would be proud of his staff cause they're the best of the best hackers in Korea. And we're proud to have him as our boss as well. Some of us were criminals before but no one cares. We're all good friends and we think Mr Lee Jeong Nam as our father figure. Some of us used to stay in jail in our high school days.(Not ME!!) like a guy named &^%$@, he was arrested by the police (Mr. Lee Jeong Nam) after he has defaced many Japanese websites and posted a Korean Flag. Mr Lee supported his family when t&^%$@, was in jail, he even paid for his educational expense out of his pocket after that guy has been released. Our age range from 20s to 30s, the youngest is 22 years and 45 (Lee Jeong Nam), the oldest. We're all crazy about computer, they're the best of the best hackers in Korea. We really love our job, we can stand with no food and with no sleep like The Dark Tangent, so lab is open for 24 hours a day. We stay overnight in lab, never go home, but strange, none of our parents complains about it... :) My boss and the management worried about their health, warned them to go back home after work and sleep in the nights and have a good rest in weekends but none of of listened. That's why my company made a small sleeping room in lab for them, and then provided a staff apartment for those who don't live in Seoul. It's located only 3 minutes walk from lab. We use it for free. Labman used to work at a Cartoon Cafe (it's like an Internet cafe where youngsters can read cartoon books). One day he heard that there'll be a hacking contest. The a dumb idea came into his mind that he could make a lot of money with it... that's why he stopped working at the cartoon cafe and stayed home for one year learning hacking alone. He succeded in gaining root permission at OlymFair hacking contest in this July, and now he's working with us. There're many BOFHs in lab ( I mean it!) there's so much to say about it though... Do you have any chance to come to Korea? If so, why don't you come and see us? You're famous in Korea, Koreans know you as the only female hacker in all over the world. You're my model, did you know that? I would not have been here if I haven't read your "The Happy Hacker" book... it changed my life. :) gotta go, please tell me if you need more information, I would tell you ANYTHNG !!! ciao~ Ebina Carolyn replies: I've heard from a number of people who have played their hacker game, and they say it rocks! As for me being the only female hacker in the world, that isn't true. How about some of you women hackers contacting these Koreans? ____________________________________________________________________ *** Holiday Books ____________________________________________________________________ You knew this was coming, right? Yet another plea to you guys to buy books? I (Carolyn Meinel) spend over $1000 on books every year, so I figure at least some of you folks may be just as addicted to the print world as I am. Anyhow, here are my favorite books of the year 2000. Heretic, by Jason Chapman, is the kind of book you give to someone who enjoys science fiction and who needs to understand why you are a white hat hacker. Chapman portrays a prescient view of a future in which cybercriminals dominate the computer security industry. I read Heretic straight through. It's been available free online at our web site since May at http://www.happyhacker.org/cgi-bin/pageview.pl . The paperback version only just rolled off the presses, so it's hard to get just yet. You can buy it with a credit card online at http://www.ccnow.com/cgi-local/cart.cgi?chapmanbooks_1-929925-38-7 Price: US residents: $20.95 (that's $16.95 plus $4.00 handling and shipping viaPriority mail) Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Great Britain, Western Europe: US$29.45 (shipped Global Priority) (Just ask your bank to make out a money order or check for US$) Everywhere else, US$31.45 (either Air Mail or Global Priority shipping) (Just ask your bank to make out a money order or check for US$) To pay by check or money order, mail your order to: Jason K. Chapman 72-11 Austin Street Suite 158 Forest Hills, NY 11375 Next on my list: Hack Proofing your Network, by Ryan Russell, et al. You can find it in many bookstores. Folks, this book will NOT tell you how to break into computers keystroke by keystroke (that's what Überhacker! -- http://happyhacker.org/uberhacker/ -- does). Hack Proofing is in some way more advanced than Überhacker! because it shows more about how to discover new hacks. For example, Chapter 5, "Diffing," reveals a technique that is key to hacking almost any computer game. No, it doesn't tell you how to instantly enter level 60 of Everquest, because if anyone publishes a way to do that, the game managers will fix the hole in a few days and kick all the exploiters out of their world. However, knowing basic principles of diffing, you might be able to discover a new way yourself. Quick tip - if you do hack Everquest, be sure to tell the managers right away how you did it. In that case, as Greggory Peck (wineditor@t...) learned when he hacked it, they won't kick you off. Third on my list is Maximum Linux Security, by anonymous. If you are a serious hacker, you will use Linux. Tired of going on a hacker IRC channel with Linux and getting your box destroyed? Maximum Linux Security will be a big help. Next comes SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional and its included manuals (see http://www.suse.com or http://www.suse.de). At last! A Linux distribution with manuals that tell you just about EVERYTHING about how to make you SuSE box hacker proof. SuSE also offers a mailing list that will alert you to any ways to break into it so you can fix your system fast. There are lots more fun computer manuals on my bookshelf - read why I like them at http://happyhacker.org/bookstore/ And for those folks who think they are too good to need manuals to learn how to secure their computers - remember Pearl Harbor. Happy hacking! ___________________________________________________________________ This is a list devoted to *legal* hacking!
